1882 – Kano Jiu-Jitsu

Jigoro Kano (1860-1938), member of the Japanese Ministry of Culture and Martial Artist, played an important role in rescuing Jiu-Jitsu’s reputation in times of peace.

1916 – Carlos Gracie

Mitsuyu Maeda introduced Carlos to Jiu-Jitsu, at the age of 14.

1925 – The First Gracie School is Founded

The first Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu School was founded in 1925 at Rua Marquês de Abrantes 106, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

1986 - Gracie Barra founded

After working for many years as an instructor at his Uncle Helio and then his brother Rolls school, Carlos wanted to pursue the dream of having his own school. But it was not until 1986 that Gracie Barra was officially founded – in the same building that it stands today.

My son and I have been members here for the past 3.5 years, and I can't say enough good things about the club. It is a fantastic place to train whether you just want to learn a new skill and get fit, or also want to compete. It is really obvious how committed the owner is to his students (and their development). This club has such a wonderful culture, that the Professor / Owner, coaches and other members have become like family to me. I am grateful this club was opened in my community.

I have had both of my daughters enrolled in this school for nearly two years now and am extremely proud of the progress they have made. The coaches instill discipline and focus during class, yet also make it fun and engaging for the kids. Both Professor and Coaches are quick to answer any questions or concerns and go above and beyond to make the school an enjoyable and positive experience for both kids and adults.

We joined GB about a year ago after moving and they have been so great to work with. Very professional and have gone above and beyond to keep kids motivated through Covid 19 offering both in-class and online classes. Coaches have a great attitude and there are always enough coaches to give the students the attention they need. They also give opportunities throughout the year for families and friends to try out through free self-defense workshop and bring a friend/family day.

The Physical Benefits

Walk into any Jiu-Jitsu academy and talk to some of the students who have just started training jiu-jitsu and ask them what it’s has done for them. Most respond with things like, “I lost so considerably weight,” or, “My body is so considerably more flexible now.” Some talk about how much strength they have gained or are better. You can physically see your body changing every day or week. You can’t see the improvements in your overall health due to training.

The Mental Benefits

Beyond any physical improvements from jiu-jitsu are often overlooked mental modifications. First, learning a technique requires as much mental activity as physical. To learn a method, you must practice it over and over. You study the process just like you would a subject for school, and then apply it. Learning to use the technology can be the most challenging part. It can be challenging to complete when attempting a new move during live rolling or drilling. To improve, you must keep endeavoring the technique over and over again. Then drill it and try again for months, sometimes years, before you start catching people during rolling.

Self-discipline and patience

Self-discipline is another something most people need to accomplish. Whether it is control, decisiveness, responsibility, or anything else that falls under self-discipline, we can do better. It is just too easy to forget what we need to do and instead go for the relaxing thing.

Pleasure and Satisfaction

Individuals that train Jiu-Jitsu are usually calm, laid back, and outgoing. Most of all, people that train Jiu-Jitsu are happy. Training works as the best possible type of therapy for everyday life.

Pinpointing Restrictions

One of the most exciting benefits is seeing people uncover what limits can be moved. I suppose it is the modern lifestyle, but we frequently put a lot of artificial boundaries on ourselves. They can be both physical and mental, and Jiu-Jitsu is there to direct you past a lot of them.
Once you start Jiu-Jitsu, you discover that your body can do much better than you thought it was. You’ve just never used it to its most real possibility until now.

What are people asking about Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the fastest-growing martial arts in the world, partly due to the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts and companies like UFC, where elite athletics demonstrates the highest leaves of Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu is more helpful in defending yourself because it teaches students how to take down an opponent, control them on the ground, and work even against bigger opponents.

Jiu-Jitsu is the ideal martial art for women, and it’s tough to argue against that. It is one martial art with the lowest injury rate and the most effective for self-defense. It is the only practical self-defense that even a smaller person can learn to defend against a bigger and stronger opponent.

Jiu-Jitsu can work in a street fight when faced with just one attacker but is rarely helpful against multiple. The techniques you can learn in Jiu-Jitsu are highly effective for taking down a single opponent, halting them, and persuading them to give up through submission, chokeholds, and arm and shoulder locks.
